Globally, there are 72 million children - majority of them girls - who are not enrolled in school.

Millions more must learn in overcrowded, unhealthy, unsafe environments. Often, children must attend ‘outdoor’ schools, where they are vulnerable to extremes of weather and classes are irregular at best. Concern works closely with communities and local government to build and renovate schools and classrooms for the poorest, most vulnerable children.

Average cost of building/renovating one school: $14,500.

The bulk of the fundraising we do at Twestival Phoenix is through our raffle and silent auction. We always need great items to help us make those a success!

Children in many parts of the world are forced to spend hours daily fetching water, and often do not attend school as a result.

Average cost of providing clean water for schools: $700 for a well or $2,000 for a borehole.

Twestival’s 2010 focus is on education in developing nations. With that in mind, Concern Worldwide (@concern) is the beneficiary of this year’s event.

Concern has been bringing education to the world’s poorest children through innovative programs and solutions for over 40 years.

Concern and Twestival are aiming to highlight eight areas which are preventing some of our poorest youth around the world from going to school and getting the education they need.

• Training Teachers - ave. cost of training 1 teacher: $300
• Furnishing Classrooms - ave. cost of furnishing 1 classroom: $800
• Providing School Meals - ave. cost to provide 1 meal/day/class of 30 for yr: $6,000
• Providing Water for Schools - ave. cost of well $700, borehole $2,000
• Reaching the Vulnerable - ave. cost to provide learning for 1 out-of-school child for 1 yr: $75
• Providing Health Education - ave. cost to provide health education for 1,000 children: $1,500
• Providing Education for Girls - ave. cost to provide learning for 1 out-of-school girl for 1 yr: $75

Since the beginning, over 42 years ago, Concern has focused on improving the lives of the poorest people by tackling the root causes of extreme poverty through focus on education, health (HIV and AIDS), livelihoods and emergency response.

Concern has more than 3,600 employees working in 28 of the world’s poorest countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.

Concern is also actively focused on the emergency in Haiti.

• Concern’s work directly reaches over 10 million people.
• Concern’s education work reaches 500,000 people in 14 countries.
• Concern helps 4.2 million people overcome extreme poverty through our livelihoods work.
• Concern health programmes reach 1.8 million people in 22 countries.
• Concern is working to reduce the prevalence of HIV and reduce the impact of AIDS, helping 400,000 people in 9 countries.
• Last year, Concern responded to 45 emergencies in 18 countries, reaching around 4 million people.

Some info about the state of education in developing nations:

• At least 72 million children around the world are not enrolled in school.
• Children, especially girls, in many parts of the world are forced to spend hours fetching water, and often do not attend school as a result.
• More than one in ten children living in the developing world never get the chance to go to school.
• Children of educated women are healthier and much more likely to be enrolled in school.
• An extra year of primary school raises a girl’s lifetime wages by 10-20%.

With 113 million children of primary school age not enrolled in school, Concern is focused on providing basic education to those who need it most.

We have a venue!!!

Twestival Phoenix Global 2010 will occur at Martini Ranch (@MartiniRanchAZ) in Scottsdale.

Twestival Global occurs on 3/25/10. Our Phoenix event will go from 7 - 10 pm.

The folks at Martini Ranch have been wonderful in working with us.

Because of their generosity, we will not have to underwrite any venue fees. They are also permitting us to bring in food and drink sponsors.

This will allow more money to directly to the Twestival Global 2010 charity, Concern Worldwide.

Martini Ranch has also been extremely flexible with the format of the event. We will have access to the entire club, including the Shaker Room (upstairs) and the VIP Room.

Twestival Phoenix Global 2010 will have a similar format to past events. We will have a mixer/tweet-up with food and drink tickets. For our fund raising efforts, we will have a small ticket fee, a raffle and silent auction.

We will also have a band on the main stage.
